NIPA EYPs and RTPI Young Planners Joint Event: The role of local planning authorities in shaping NSIPs

The topic of the event is Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects. It will be a panel discussion with representatives local authorities, developers and consultancies. The event is aimed at young professionals working on large scale infrastructure projects. The event will increase collaboration and networking between NIPA and RTPI and allow young practitioners to learn more about the two organisations and how they can work together.

What you’ll gain:

• Multi-sector perspectives on NSIPs: Because the panel includes representatives from local authorities, developers and consultancies, delegates will move beyond their own “silo” to understand the competing pressures of a major project.
• Local authorities: Understanding their statutory role as a consultee and how they balance national infrastructure needs with local community impacts.
• Consultancies: Learning the “glue” that holds the process together, from Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) to managing the Examination phase.
• Delegates will gain a clearer understanding of the six stages of the NSIP process, which differs significantly from standard Town & Country Planning: Pre-application Strategy: Learning why this is the most critical and time-consuming phase. Examination Skills: Understanding how to handle written questions from the Examining Authority (ExA), how to manage hearings and the intensity of the six-month statutory limit.
• NIPA & RTPI: Delegates will learn how NIPA focuses specifically on the regime (lawyers, planners, surveyors, and environmentalists), while the RTPI focuses on the art and science of planning. Understanding how these two overlap is key to becoming a well-rounded practitioner.
• Mentorship & Membership: Information on how to achieve Chartered Town Planner (MRTPI) status or join NIPA’s specialised working groups.
• Networking: High-quality face time with peers who will be the future “Promoters” and “Case Officers” of the UK’s energy, transport and water infrastructure.
